HCL Domino in the Age of AI

Europe has ZERO AI sovereignty. And most companies still haven't noticed.

I just spoke at Engage 2026 on a topic the industry doesn't want to discuss:

What happens when the AI services you depend on today… disappear tomorrow?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿

China has 1,000,000 engineers working on AI. The US has 200,000.
9 out of 10 French citizens' personal data is on the dark web for €0.20–0.60.
Foreign actors hold an effective kill switch over our digital infrastructure.
We are a US-colonized digital zone — by habit, by convenience, and by default.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗖 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽

Every token you consume today is paid for with VC money.

The AI APIs your teams are calling right now are not profitable. They are subsidized, massively, by venture capital betting on future lock-in.

When the funding dries up, prices spike to reflect real costs — or the service disappears entirely. And you'll have built your entire workflow on a platform you don't control, in a jurisdiction with different laws, at a price that was never real.

Each new data center generation also requires 10x more electricity than the last, and is incompatible with the previous one. Hard physical limits: copper, chips, energy.

This is not just financially unsustainable. It is physically unsustainable.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁?

When compute becomes rationed — and it will — here is the priority queue:

Tier 1 — US Military & Intelligence
Tier 2 — Banks, Insurance, Large Corporates
Tier 3 — SMEs & consultancies… if we're lucky
Tier 4 — Everyone else. Left out.

The architecture for this rationing already exists. It's called enterprise contracts, API rate limits, and tiered pricing.

External Provider:
- Price volatility at their discretion
- Kill switch in someone else's hands
- Zero privacy guarantee
- VC price today is not tomorrow's price
- A Damocles' sword — always

Own Your AI:
- On-premises, under your control
- Your data stays yours — always
- No kill switch. No dependency.
- Predictable, stable cost
- Full digital sovereignty

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸

At Data101, we built and deployed this in production:

𝗛𝗖𝗟 𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗼 + 𝗢𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮 + 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆 + 𝗞𝗘𝗘𝗣 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗔𝗣𝗜 + 𝗻𝟴𝗻

No cloud subscription. No VC-funded API. No external dependency. GDPR-compliant by design — everything stays inside your perimeter.

HCL Domino has been on your premises, under your control, for decades. You already have the foundation.

Mistral AI is the one European exception worth naming — the only credible EU foundation model provider — and it runs on commodity hardware via Ollama.

─────────────────────────

The question is not whether to use AI.

It is who controls it — and whether that answer is you.
